Cadentia 3

Originally developed as an in-house reference for our consultancy work and later productised, the Cadentia 3 is a 3-way standmount loudspeaker that delivers a level of acoustic performance typically found only in top-tier large active studio monitors — but in a passive design. So you can pair it with your favourite amplifiers and sound sources!

Enjoy your music collection with a new level of realism, scale, and effortless dynamics.

Every Cadentia 3 is built here in Cambridge, UK and comes with its own measurement certificate. Oak veneer is the default finish.

What are you actually hearing when listening to speakers in a room?

The sound you hear is a combination of the direct sound from the speakers and the reflections from the walls. The radiation pattern (Directivity) of the speaker determines the intensity and the spectrum of the reflections, which strongly affects how you perceive the timbre of the music and the accuracy of its imaging.

Wide and precise.

Sculpted to minimise diffraction, the front baffle of the Cadentia 3 incorporates an in-house developed, superellipse waveguide-loaded tweeter & midrange section that produces a wide, smoothly tapered directivity profile, as shown in the horizontal polar graph below. The closely spaced tweeter and midrange driver, working with a low crossover point, trick the brain into perceiving a single coherent point source. The result is a design that balances soundstage width with pinpoint imaging precision, presenting a lifelike sound image right in front of you.

As clear as it should be.

We understand that pure pistonic motion is the key to delivering every impulse and all the micro-dynamics within the music accurately. Therefore, we have selected tweeter and mid-range drivers with TPCD (Thin-Ply Carbon Diaphragms) for the Cadentia 3. These diaphragms exhibit excellent structural stiffness and well-controlled break-up modes while maintaining their lightweight nature. As for the woofer, we’ve gone with a hardened paper cone, light and sufficiently rigid for its operating bandwidth. The carefully designed crossover ensures each driver operates within its pistonic range, achieving exceptional clarity and tonal accuracy.

Bracing, double down!

The cabinet shouldn’t join the performance. It is critical to reinforce the cabinet to suppress its vibration, especially when a large woofer is in use. The optimised dual-layer bracing grid design and a front baffle structure with a maximum thickness of 51mm strengthen the cabinet substantially, while keeping the construction of the kit manageable.

Absorption, optimised.

A sizable cabinet like the Cadentia 3’s is prone to internal standing-wave issues. Therefore, it’s crucial to include sufficient acoustic absorption material inside, but not so much that it reduce the bass output. Thanks to the dual-layer bracing grid, we’re able to position just the right amount of absorption material exactly where it matters most — the centre area of the cabinet, where the particle velocity of these standing waves is highest. This approach effectively absorbs them without compromising bass performance.

Remarkably realistic, effortlessly dynamic.

People say good things come in threes - that’s very true for the Cadentia 3. All the drivers are equipped with an FEA-optimised, powerful neodymium motor featuring distortion-suppressing components. By allowing the drivers to operate within their own range, the 3-way topology significantly reduces the most audible type of distortion in the system - IMD (Intermodulation Distortion), which is a common cause of unwanted graininess and harshness in sound characteristics that creep in as playback levels increase. Meanwhile, harmonic distortion simply stays well below the audible threshold in typical listening conditions. The low-distortion nature and the long-excursion 9-inch woofer allow the Cadentia 3 to deliver music with texture true to the source, a sense of scale, and explosive dynamics when required - all without breaking a sweat.

The Cadentia 3 crossovers consist of mainly high-quality film capacitors and air-core inductors for their low current distortion characteristics. Being the very soul of a loudspeaker, its design largely determines the tonality and the directivity of the system. Using a Klippel NFS and CAD software, the crossover of the Cadentia 3 was professionally designed to achieve an extremely neutral tonal balance. With nothing emphasised and nothing being taken away, it simply sounds…real.

Nothing more, nothing less.
